It takes a special "license" to represent prisoners before the Board of Pardons and Paroles. A disclosure copy authorizing the lawyer to practice correction law must be attached to each parole package, together with a proper attorney's affidavit in compliance with Parole Board Rules. Ray Taylor is one of the few Texas attorneys authorized to practice this subspecialty. Because parole rates are at their lowest ever, it is particularly important to seek representation from an attorney who is able to prepare the right parole package. Our law firm is one of a very few firms practicing this area of criminal law in San Antonio and the surrounding area.
Parole is far from automatic - the justification for parole must be well documented
Contrary to popular belief, prisoners are no longer automatically paroled at their first eligibility. According to the statistics kept by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, only about 20 percent of unrepresented petitioners receive parole on the first try. A strong case for parole must be made. At our law firm, we develop parole packages, which are books about the client and why he or she will succeed on parole. They include statements from neighbors, relatives and former co-workers. They include job offers, letters of admission to college or trade school, and any other appropriate documents that will speak to the client's ability to be a model citizen once paroled. Each parole package is unique to that prisoner and each of our parole packages contain the "assessment factors" pivotal to getting the earliest possible parole.
Start thinking about parole at least one year before you become eligible
If you have a friend or loved one hoping to be paroled, you should come to our office to review our previously successful parole packages. This visit should take place at least a year before the anticipated parole hearing. If you and your family decide to hire us to prepare a parole package, it can take up to a year to have the material prepared and bound in "booklet" form, and in the possession of the parole board at the appropriate time and in the appropriate form. IT IS RARE FOR FAMILY MEMBERS OR PRISONERS TO PUT TOGETHER A PROPER PAROLE PACKAGE! THE RULES OF THE PAROLE COMMISSION MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY.
An experienced lawyer can make a real difference at a parole hearing
People convicted of certain types of crimes SELDOM receive parole. A successful application for parole can reduce the time to serve by more than 50 percent. We attribute this to our thorough and meticulous preparation and our ability to help the Parole Board see our client as a real person who will be able to succeed outside prison. We also scrupulously comply with the Parole Board Commission Rules.
